Per section 2, Conformance, expanded syntax is permitted – a conforming implementation may handle these string literals as it sees fit.

Eh, maybe the spec should change in this case, we could make it more explicit whether the section 2 loophole applies to string escapes. I'd be good with that too. :-)

Agreed these are allowable via the extension clause. Casting them off to best practices.
